GLP-1s – What should we be asking ourselves?

GLP-1 medications are being spoken about a LOT right now.

What we should be asking ourselves isn’t whether they work.

It’s what foundation we are building underneath them—especially in midlife.

In the menopausal years, your metabolism is shifting. Muscle mass declines more easily. Insulin sensitivity changes.

Bone health becomes a priority, not a future concern.

GLP-1s can be incredibly helpful.

They reduce appetite, improve glucose control, and support weight loss.

But they do not replace the basics.

In fact, during this stage of life, the basics matter more than ever.

Here’s is what I recommend for every woman considering or using GLP-1 therapy:

1. Pay attention to PROTEIN

This is non-negotiable in midlife.

Weight loss without enough protein can accelerate muscle loss—and muscle is your metabolic engine.

It supports blood sugar stability, strength, bone health, and long-term independence.

2. Ensure enough FIBRE

Fibre, ideally from food, is essential for metabolic and gut health.

It supports the microbiome and improves glucose control.

GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying, which can increase the risk of constipation and bloating, especially if fibre intake is low.

3. Stay HYDRATED

Reduced appetite often means reduced fluid intake.

But hydration is essential for digestion, energy, and metabolic signalling.

This is one of the simplest things to overlook—and one of the most important to get right.

4. Maintain and build MUSCLE

Muscle is not just about aesthetics.

Muscle is involved in insulin sensitivity, and bone protection.

Muscle determines your ability to move well and stay strong.

Losing weight without preserving muscle is not a win.

5. Honour your sleep and nervous system

Your metabolism is deeply connected to your nervous system.

Poor sleep and chronic stress disrupt appetite signals, blood sugar, and fat loss.

GLP-1s are a just a tool.

With the right foundation, they can be supportive, even transformative.

Without it, they can become a more expensive version of a crash diet.

This is why working with a qualified nutritional therapist during a GLP-1 journey matters.

Because this isn’t just about weight loss.

It’s about protecting muscle, supporting bone health, maintaining metabolic flexibility.

The most important part of this process is creating a way of eating and moving that still works when the medication is no longer part of the picture.

The goal must be to have a plan that supports a body that functions well, now and for the decades ahead.
